Six people have applied to fill a Las Vegas area Assembly seat left vacant when Democrat Alexander Assefa resigned his post amid a criminal investigation.

Clark County officials said the eligible candidates who submitted their applications by the midday Tuesday deadline were:

Jack Absher III, president of Absher Enterprises, which consists of businesses including two Long John Silvers franchises and commercial real estate Chris Hardin, a real estate investor Juana Leia Jordan, a retired psychologist with the state Department of Corrections Saramei “Sara” Kalaoram, a former research analyst and communications intern with the Culinary Union Tracy Marie Brown-May, an executive at Opportunity Village, a nonprofit that serves adults with disabilities in Southern Nevada Izack Tenorio, director of development at Cristo Rey St. Viator, a college preparatory high school

The Clark County Commission has the responsibility to choose from among the applicants, and will likely choose a replacement during its meeting on Feb. 2. The person must live in the district and be a Democrat, the same party as Assefa.

Three submitted applications were not accepted by county officials; one was not properly notarized, one was filed by a person who lives outside the district and another was filed by a registered Republican.

Commissioners also must fill a Senate vacancy left when Democrat Yvanna Cancela resigned to take a job in President Joe Biden’s administration.
