Equity statement, superintendent job before Carson City school board – Nevada Appeal

Sunday, September 12, 2021

Discussion and possible action to approve an equity statement and possible selection of a third-party consultant to help in the superintendent hiring process are among the items on the Carson City school board’s agenda Tuesday.
Since this past spring, concerns about the concept of equity have been raised consistently in school board meetings resulting from the CCSD strategic plan presentation during a professional learning community meeting that discussed the Christopher Rufo document, “Critical Race Theory.” The meeting was meant to discuss efforts to update the district’s strategic plan, but community members since have provided public comment at board meetings that the term “equity” is politically toxic, insufficiently defined or compares to critical race theory.
Discussion and possible action to approve changes to CSD policy 303 regarding the superintendent’s position will be addressed, followed by an item in which the board will consider action to select a proposal from three consultants to assist in the hiring process for the district’s top position. Submissions from third-party consultants have been collected from GR Recruiting, McPherson and Jacobson, LLC, and the Nevada Association of School Boards, and the cost of services is not to exceed $19,050.
Other items include a presentation by Carson City Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Matt Smith and Deputy Gage Mead on the Sworn program to address drug and alcohol prevention for pre-teen and young adults in the district. During the joint meeting with the Board of Supervisors and the school board on Sept. 2, Smith said the program is designed to educate students about the dangers of marijuana, vaping, prescription drugs and other youth-related issues.
District chief financial services officer Andrew Feuling will provide an update on student enrollment for 2021-22 and projections for the budget
